The Puppy Club - Puppy School
Congratulations on the new addition to your family!
The PETVET Lower Hutt puppy school program has been created to guide you and your family through the fun and sometimes challenging puppy stages, while teaching your puppy manners and how to make friends.
Puppies develop vital social and communication skills in the first few months of life. We highly recommend puppies start puppy school as soon as possible and ideally before the age of 12 weeks.

Our puppy school class structure
Puppy school is a fun and interactive course designed to not only teach you how to train your puppy, but also understand how your puppy learns, communicates and develops.
Puppy school is a five session course where we will give you the latest information and tools, along with tips and tricks, to ensure your puppy becomes a social, happy and confident dog.
Session one is run as a ‘human only’ class with the following four classes run as group puppy classes. Each group puppy session combines basic manners and training with safe, fun and calm socialization.
How long does each class run for?
Each of the 5 puppy school sessions is approximately 1 hour in duration.
What will I learn?
Our classes are personalised to ensure you and your puppy get the most out of puppy school.
We teach more than basic training. While it is important to teach a puppy how to sit and stay we focus on teaching lifelong socialisation skills and manners to develop happy confident dogs. Along with training your puppy you will also gain personalised advice on:

- toilet training
- Your puppy’s development including age specific behaviours.
- Puppy socialization, communication and body language.
- How to calm and handle your puppy in a positive manner.
- How your puppy learns and learning for life.
- Setting up your puppy’s home and creating a safe space.
- Environmental enrichment and play.
We also provide personalised advice on the health and wellbeing of your puppy including nutrition, preventatives and veterinary care.
Classes are designed to reflect the needs of you and your puppy’s lifestyle. You will learn valuable life-long tips that you can continue teaching and training at home.
What will my puppy learn?
You puppy will graduate with a wide range of skills and manners to ensure they develop into happy confident dogs. The following are just a few of the skills your puppy will learn:
- How to make friends:
- Socialisation and communication through play sessions with other puppies in a safe and controlled environment.

Our training methods
Training your pet should be a fun experience. Our training methods will create positive experiences to develop a love of learning and a happy lifelong relationship.
Our program is based on positive reinforcement as it is known to be the best method for training behaviours while maintaining a strong life-long relationship with your dog.
When should I join puppy school?
As soon as possible! Puppies develop fast, developing vital communication and socialisation skills in their first few months of life. We highly recommend puppies start puppy school as soon as possible and ideally before the age of 12 weeks.
All puppies must have had at least two vaccinations and a vet check a minimum of 2 weeks prior to their first group class.
What is the age range for puppies in puppy school class?
We are committed to ensuring your puppy has positive, safe and fun experiences, especially while learning to socialise. This is why all puppies must be between the ages of 8-16 weeks old for their first class. We keep our classes small; to ensure you don’t miss out we recommend enrolling in puppy school as soon as you bring your puppy home.
We are so excited to be joining you on this journey.
